Heffley Lake Fishing Resort, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada.
The
Lake:
Heffley Lake is 7.2 km (4.5 miles) long and 10 to 30 meters (30 to
90 feet) deep. Fairly narrow in places and nestled between wooded hills
at 1000 meters (3,100 feet) it is considered by many to be one of the
prettiest in the district.
Heffley,
situated in the world renowned fly fishing area surrounding Kamloops, BC, offers good quality angling, a fact that can be judged by the number of
water birds. Loons and osprey return each year
to rear their families assured of a plentiful food supply. Bald and
golden eagles, great blue herons, mallards, grebes and golden eye also
summer here.

Angling:
Heffley Lake offers a variety of aquatic habitat. There are shoals and
weed beds, deep cold drop-offs, and shallow marl areas, all of which
attract natural spawn Kamloops Rainbow Trout, and are ideal for fly fishing!
For
the seasoned angler, Heffley is a challenge that can be met and conquered,
but trout don't get to be big by being stupid. Different seasons mean
they will be attracted by different foods. Our Kamloops Rainbow Trout range in size from 1-3 kg (2-7 lbs.) and float tubing and fly fishing are popular pastimes.
The
angling season begins with the ice melting on the lake, which usually
happens in the latter half of April; however, the real action doesn't
start until May. Warmer temperatures produce the first of the insect
hatches and the trout begin visiting their favourite feeding areas once
again.
Fly fishing action
continues to build in June and July with increasing numbers of insects
being hatched encouraging the trout to take not only the real insect
but also the clever imitation. While fly fishing is one of the most
exciting approaches to Heffley, it isn't the only way. Depending on the
time of year and temperature, trolling with lightweight spin gear or
still angling can be productive.
There are no coarse species in Heffley, only the scrappy Kamloops Rainbow Trout, most of which are natural spawn. For about a month, beginning
in mid May, guests to our resort can walk the banks of the spawning
stream. Trout don't all spawn at once or every year and unlike salmon, they don't die afterward.
The
challenge is determining what the
fish are interested in and going where they are feeding. In other
words, thinking like a trout.
But
even if an angler is not always successful, it's is the perfect excuse
for floating around these lovely waters and doing absolutely ... nothing!
